Combining CBT and Mindfulness Approaches
Dr Coleiro believes that clients can benefit from an integration of CBT and mindfulness approaches. Some clients may gravitate to one approach more than the other – whilst in many cases clients can learn and apply skills from both approaches. For example, it is not uncommon for clients to find that their ability to change thought processes varies from thought to thought. Clients can find that some thoughts are able to be challenged and restructured – whilst other thoughts can prove more difficult to change. The more difficult to challenge thoughts may be more effectively managed with a mindfulness letting go approach. As such, by combining the approaches, clients are better equipped to be effective in identifying and responding to the thought processes of their mind, and thus are more able to manage symptoms of depression and anxiety. A visual representation of combining CBT and mindfulness approaches is shown below.
Dr Coleiro draws from a number of a therapeutic approaches which combine CBT and mindfulness including Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. For more information please contact Dr Chris Coleiro.
